New WinMo Build for PPC, 0.5.2
We just posted a new Alpha build for Winmo 6 Pro (PPC). This build should be quite a bit more stable than the previous 0.5.0 or 0.5.1 build, with a number of bug fixes and enhancements. Again, we're still in Alpha, so this is still some ways away from production ready, but it should work fine for most people's chatting needs.
What's new:
- Chat Logs. Chats are logged by session for each buddy. You can get to the chat logs by highlighting the buddy in the buddy list and selecting the menu option or by selecting the menu option directly from a chat screen. Chat sessions are organized by time (time the chat started). We should be adding the ability to export/email the logs shortly. Search is also in the plans.
- Much improved networking. While still not perfect, it's much more efficient than before. We cut down the overall bandwidth usage by quite a bit, which also should significantly improve performance and battery conservation. We have not yet implemented battery saver modes, but that's coming.
- New chat styles. This is under preferences (which is still very incomplete).
- Improved keypad navigation on the chat screen. You can use the directional pad to switch chats (up to the chat canvas area, then left/right).
- Improved notifications. The sound on the default send and receive notifications should be a little louder now, it should also follow your profiles. Notifications are integrated with your control panel "Sounds and Notifications" applet. There are currently 3 events for JiveTalk (New IM, Foreground IM, Sent IM). New IM is the alert when the screen is turned off or when the app is in background. Foreground and sent are the alerts you get when you're actively chatting. The control panel applet will grab sounds (any wav or mp3 file) from your "Windows" directory, so you should be able to customize this anyway you like.
As always, comments and feedback are welcomed. Email or otherwise. We have lots more planned for this app.
Sprint Mogul / Verizon xv6800 keyboard problem
A few users using either the Sprint Mogul or Verizon xv6800 have reported problems with using their hard keyboard to type in JiveTalk for Winmo. It seems like the hard keyboard is in a permanent shift (fn) lock and only the alternative keys are typed.
This is apparently caused by a firmware problem with certain CDMA builds of the HTC model. UTStarcom, who handles CDMA sales and packaging for HTC, has posted the official patch here:
http://www.utstar.com/pcd/downloads/XV6800%20QWERTY%20Keyboard%20Fix%201-9-08.zip
This patch should work for the Mogul as well, if you're experiencing the same problem.
This is also a write up about it here: http://www.phonenews.com/verizon-xv6800-gets-keyboard-fix-2714/
